The first Charter flight from Japan to the southern Kuril Islands will take place on September 23, if it is favorable weather, said at a press conference the Minister of foreign Affairs of Japan, Taro Kono.

«At the end of the summit, which was held in September, it was agreed to make a visit to the aircraft (on the southern Kuril Islands – ed.) to visit the graves of former residents of the Islands in a day with favorable weather, as a starting point taking on September 23. This will be the first visit of the former inhabitants of the Islands carried out on the aircraft. We hope that this will facilitate their journey,» said the Minister.

The government group will be accompanied by Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Kazuyuki, Nakai and other officials.

The Minister stressed that the implementation of such projects, «efforts on the four Islands will bring results, but will also lead to the understanding of the peoples of the two countries that matters for the conclusion of a peace Treaty.»

The question about the beginning of flights between Northern Japan and southern Kuril Islands was discussed during the meeting, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin in late April. Still, there was only sea route to visit former residents of the South Kuril Islands. To expand exchanges and facilitate visits to former residents of the Islands of the graves of relatives was proposed by air.

The first flight was scheduled for June 18. It was planned that the aircraft for one day will visit Islands Kunashir and Iturup. But the flight had to be postponed due to inclement weather. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin after a meeting with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe said that the first flight could take place in September.
