Sanctions against Russia could weaken after the introduction in the Donbass UN peacekeepers with a full mandate, said former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the annual meeting «Yalta European strategy» (YES).

«If Russia accepts what I said, namely the provision of the UN peacekeeping mission clear mandate, with full control of the Russian-Ukrainian border and cover all areas to protect the population in Russia can be given a «carrot» in the form of lifting certain sanctions», — quotes Rasmussen, the press service of YES.

In his opinion, Russia was forced to announce a proposal for peacekeepers because of the possibility of granting Ukraine lethal weapons. Rasmussen believes that the process of attracting peacekeepers will be long enough.

«Now you’ll have to deal with a very long process in the UN Security Council. Before the election, the actual steps will not, by the time you need to put pressure on Russia. Have not discarded any options, including the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine», — he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin previously said that he supports the idea of sending UN peacekeepers to Ukraine, but we can only talk about the function of ensuring the safety of OSCE personnel, peacekeepers must be on the boundary line and no other areas.
