. Modern Teens are growing up much slower than did their parents, and much later begin to work, to consume alcohol and tobacco, and also to have sex, say psychologists in a paper published in the journal Child Development.

«Today, Teens are much later take over and «adult» concerns, such as job or a driver’s license, and, much later, begin to try «adult» pleasures, such as sex or alcohol. It is neither good nor bad, it’s just a reflection of the contemporary cultural climate in the United States,» says Hejun Park (Heejung Park) College city Bryn Mar (USA).

In recent years the society has strengthened two conflicting stereotype. The first suggests that Teens today are very Mature early and begin to drink alcohol and sexually active before they graduate from school. The second suggests that young people, on the contrary, it is very late maturing, lives with his parents and has to be 25-30 years.

On the other hand, a recent study by psychologists draw the opposite picture – for example, American scientists have discovered in the past year that young people were less promiscuous and more modest than their parents of the «Pepsi generation» and their grandfathers and great-grandfathers of the generation of «the sixties.»

Park and his colleague Jean Twenge (Jean Twenge) from the state University of San Diego (USA) found new evidence in favor of this idea by analyzing and comparing the results of surveys among young Americans, which is held annually by social services from 1978 to the present day.

In these interviews in total took part 8.3 million adolescents aged 13 to 19 years, which has helped scientists to make fairly detailed picture of how evolved the manner of teenagers growing up over the past four decades.

As it turned out, the teenagers of today grow up much slower than it was during the cold war – on average, today’s 18-year-old graduate of the school consistent with their habits, and typical exercises that, what he did 15-year-old boys and girls 20-30 years ago.

This applies not only to work and independent living, as today parents consider, but also sexual life and bad habits. For example, the proportion of ninth-graders, confessed that they already had sex, fell by almost two times in comparison with 1991, and the number of those who have tried alcohol decreased by 30% during the same period.

Interestingly, this trend affects not only the rich and highly educated population, but virtually all social groups in the United States, which speaks to the global nature of such a «slow» growing. As the scientists, the emergence of this phenomenon was not associated with increased stress at school or in universities, but they do not exclude the possibility that this could be «guilty» of the Internet.

Scientists believe that the reason for this can be two things – the profound changes in the culture of the United States have relied on the «slow» maturing more interesting choice for teenagers, as well as increasing life expectancy, due to which people today have children much later than in the past, and can postpone the «adult» stuff.
