France calls on Russia to prosecute those responsible for the oppression of gays in Chechnya

Russia should do everything in its power to prosecute persons involved in violation of human rights in Chechnya, said in an interview with RIA Novosti, Ambassador of France in Moscow, Sylvie Berman.

The President of France Emmanuel macron during the Versailles meeting in late may, said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s concerns about the situation of LGBT community in Chechnya.

«We have expressed our concern about the situation in Chechnya, in particular, to the situation of persons belonging to the LGBT community. Yet we know that they are subjected to shocking treatment. There is impunity,» said a French diplomat.

In her words, «it is important that Russia has done everything in her power to prosecute persons involved in such violation of human rights».

In the beginning of April, «Novaya Gazeta» has published an article which said about the mass detention in Chechnya residents based on sexual orientation. Press Secretary of the head of Chechnya, Alvi Karimov denied the information of the newspaper, and the press Secretary of the head of state, Dmitry Peskov, said that no reason not to trust the information about the absence of any persecution of gays presented Kadyrov in the course of communication with the President Vladimir Putin.
