The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church issued a decree, which forbade the monks of mount Athos to get down the mountain without permission, according to the portal «Russian Athos.»

«The Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church has published a decree «On the sacred-action on the canonical territory of the Church of Greece», according to which the abbots and monks of mount Athos stay in dioceses in the territory of Greece and to participate in worship and parish events, speeches, sermons and lectures is now possible only with the written permission of the Synod,» the message reads.

This decision caused dissatisfaction of the Athonite monks, as the majority of them obey not the Church of Greece and the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The Hierarch of one of the dioceses of the «New lands» in Greece, nominally under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople, in an interview with the Greek news Agency Romfea.gr called the decision «unacceptable» and stressed that it could lead to a worsening of inter-Church relations.

«Holy mountain are subordinate to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, why should we seek permission from the Holy Synod of the Greek Church?» — he is perplexed.
