The detected object is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and consists of two bodies. It is unique in that it is the first known double asteroid, which can be attributed to the class of comets: the two bodies of almost equal mass and size are orbiting each other at a distance of about 100 kilometers, leaving a trail like a comet. The object has a name 288P.

According to scientists, this phenomenon has not previously been observed. It is noted that from the knowledge of the origin and evolution of asteroids showing cometary activity, depends on the understanding of scientists of the processes of formation of the Solar system and the detection of such object can help professionals advance in research.
