The UN Secretary General thanked the head of Azerbaijan’s concern about the Karabakh conflict

UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres at the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in new York expressed concern over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and expressed hope that the OSCE Minsk group (MG) of the OSCE will do everything possible in connection with the settlement of the conflict.

«President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has met in General headquarters of the United Nations in new York with UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres. UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres expressed satisfaction with the meeting with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The Secretary General said: «Azerbaijan is our old friend. Azerbaijan is doing a lot of useful work, carrying out initiatives and activities», — said the press service of the head of Azerbaijan.

Guterres noted the high level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Nations, said the existing understanding.

«He said that Azerbaijan is actively involved in UN projects. The Secretary-General of the institutions expressed concern with the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, expressed hope that the OSCE will do everything possible in connection with the settlement of the conflict», — stated in the message.

According to the press service, President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan carries out significant work in the framework of the UN.

«The head of Azerbaijan spoke of the global forum of the UN Alliance of civilizations, the forum on intercultural dialogue, the events held in Baku in cooperation with the Council of Europe, noting the continuation of such projects in Azerbaijan. The head of state noted the development of the Azerbaijani economy, low poverty level, almost 100 percent literacy. President Ilham Aliyev said that the Armenian side prevents negotiations on settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and is trying to tighten his permission» — adds a press-service.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in February 1988 when Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous region (NKAR) announced their withdrawal from the Azerbaijani SSR. In September 1991, in the centre of Nagorno-Karabakh Stepanakert it has been declared creation of Nagorno-the Karabakh Republic (NKR). The Azerbaijani authorities during the subsequent military conflict have lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Since 1992 negotiations on peaceful settlement of the conflict within OSCE Minsk group. Azerbaijan insists on maintaining its territorial integrity, Armenia protects interests of unrecognized Republic as Nagorno-Karabakh is not a party to the negotiations.
