The government should regulate activities of news channels, including the Telegram messenger, perhaps even to equate them to the media, said RIA Novosti, first Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee on state building and law Mikhail Emelyanov.

The newspaper «Vedomosti» wrote earlier that the press service of the many departments and companies to include in the official media monitoring, to the leaders of socio-political channels of the messenger Telegram. Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, in turn, told journalists that the Kremlin is monitoring the main social and political channels in the Telegram. However, according to him, one should not exaggerate the content quality of these resources, and they can hardly be attributed to the traditional media.

«Regulation is certainly necessary, because these information channels become a powerful social factor in the spread of information. And it is not always reliable and fair, and often destructive,» said Emelyanov.

Answering the question about the appropriateness of equating similar information channels to the media, the MP said it may be one of the possible steps. «Why not? Because the degree of impact on society they have approximately the same value as the print and electronic media. If you will not regulate our government, our information space will be subject to other States, other anti-Russian forces. It’s quite obvious,» — said Emelyanov.

Of course, you will need to determine the criteria that will apply to the respective information channels, but that is another question, he said. «We do have supporters that everything should be free, nobody should regulate, the state should not regulate. This is the wrong position,» — said the first Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee.
