The Dalai Lama on the teachings of the Buddhists of the Baltic States and Russia in Riga told us about the benefits of altruism for solving urgent problems of the modern world as a whole and each person individually, and practicing analytical meditation.

«Lies, hypocrisy, deception, violence, theft, murder, wars, all this is happening in the world because people are ignorant of the happiness of other beings. All the troubles of our time originate in self-centeredness. If we don’t exchange their joy on the suffering of others, not only will not achieve awakening, but in this life we will be unhappy,» said the Dalai Lama.

According to him, the more in the human heart of altruism, the more his friends, those who love him, and the more happiness. The same egoism separates man from the other, makes it alone. «If we learn to appreciate others, to neglect their own comfort and happiness, then find happiness. Love for others, compassion, caring for others is what leads to happiness, both short-term and long-term», — says the spiritual leader.

Moreover, under the compassion in Buddhism is understood as the wish that all suffering beings get rid of sufferings, and under the love that they all found happiness.

For the development of altruism, the Dalai Lama recommended to read the work of the famous Buddhist philosopher of VIII century by Shantideva called «the Way of the bodhisattva». It describes, in particular, practice patience and mental «replace self with others».

«Shantideva says that every joy and happiness originate in the desire to bring happiness to others, and any pain and suffering — the desire of happiness only for themselves. This teaching will help to cope with jealousy, anger and other negative emotions. It is very important to put others above yourself», — he stressed.

However, he noted that the development of patience and altruism are all religious traditions.

«And all the Buddha’s teachings can be summarized as follows: don’t do bad, do good, completely ease your mind. Negative — everything that harms other living beings. And the good is that which brings other benefits. All actions should be motivated by a desire to benefit, to serve other beings. You need to think about the benefits of altruism and the dangers of self-centeredness», said the Dalai Lama.

One of the main themes of the teachings of the Dalai Lama in Riga this year was the right approach to meditation, in recent years, become fashionable all around the world. The leader of Tibetan Buddhism urged to take seriously the practice and gave comments on this issue to the fundamental works of the Indian philosopher of VIII century of Kamalashila «Steps of contemplation». This text explains what are the different types of meditation, how to prepare, what to concentrate. The translation of this text has recently appeared in the Russian language and has aroused great interest among readers.

«In the West today many use the word meditation, but not always realize its essence,» said the Dalai Lama.

According to him, meditation is divided into two types: shamatha and vipashyana. Shamatha is the single-pointed concentration of the mind on a single object. Vipashyana is the right analysis, «wisdom», says the Dalai Lama. Moreover, it is necessary to develop them in equal measure.

«One of my friends was engaged in meditation, focusing your mind on the repulsiveness. But due to such single-pointed concentration, his mind dulled. Wisdom, realization of emptiness, of selflessness that all phenomena, the selflessness that «I», the mind can only be achieved Vipassana, analytical meditation. I say this from my own experience», — said the Dalai Lama.

Explaining the described Kamalashila conditions for meditation, the Dalai Lama made a special emphasis on the ability of a yogi to settle for less in housing, clothing and food. «My friend who is a monk lived under the crown of the tree,» said the spiritual leader. He also remembered the examples of Christian ascetics.

Another important condition for meditation in the «Steps of contemplation» is called «not getting involved in a variety of cases — refusal of sale, and other unworthy occupations, and also from too close contact with lay people and monks, from medicine and astrology.» In addition, meditation the yogin is enjoined to abstain from meat, fish and food is not conducive to health.
