President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev on Thursday proposed the creation in Bishkek of the international platform for the discussion of issues of interaction of state and religion.

In the capital of Kyrgyzstan on September 28-29 international conference «Islam in a modern secular state» with the participation of scientists, experts and representatives of government agencies from 19 countries, in particular the Minister of state for external Affairs of India, Mosebar Jawad Akbar, state Advisor of the President of Uzbekistan Rustam Kamilov, Minister of culture of Egypt Helmi Alumnum and others.

Atambayev noted that in Central Asia, «for centuries, the living representatives of the peoples of the combining in the worldview of traditional beliefs with Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam.» «Our ancestors at the time embraced Islam because it does not contradict local customs and traditions, worldview of the nomads. Today it has become an integral part of our traditional culture,» he said.

«We are building a democratic, legal and secular state, committed to the preservation and development of cultural identity of the people of Kyrgyzstan. For us it is very important to establish interaction between the state and religious communities. Therefore, given our experience, we propose to adopt a relevant Declaration and create a permanent international platform in Bishkek to continue our dialogue, to exchange experiences and discuss issues of interaction of state and religion, countering radicalism and extremism,» — said the President of Kyrgyzstan.

He believes that the reason for the tension associated with Islam, is the dogmatism of some politicians religious leaders and it starts with rejection of one’s own national traditions, language and culture. «The current wave of extremism and terrorism, hiding behind religious slogans, can be overcome through the strengthening of national States, the preservation of their own culture, language and identity. After all, Islam does not oblige anyone to use religious symbols, does not impose its ideas and the faith that does not lead to a single dogma in matters of worship,» — said Atambayev.

According to him, «we have the interpretation of Islamic canons, not taking into account the… realities of the modern world». «These ideological differences are used for radical and extremist groups that exploit religious rhetoric, wreak havoc, commit terrorist acts, and provoke conflicts, including armed. No country is immune from such destructive activities,» he said. According to Atambayev, the radicalization of Islam is fertile ground especially in those countries «where there are no clear mechanisms of change of elites and authorities, where for many years ruled by corrupt and authoritarian regimes».
