Scientists from nust «MISIS» developed the material based on which you can create a durable and easy-to-implement replacement bones, joints and muscles.

The main issue in the implementation of the material in the body is its safety. Some substances are toxic, some body just rejects. Studies have shown that the basis for the artificial joint can only be an artificial polyethylene with very long molecules. But the major disadvantage is the low wear resistance. Scientists from nust «MISIS» polyethylene reinforced with carbon nanotubes, whereby the wear resistance was increased in two times. According to calculations, the service life of the implant will be more than 15 years.

On the basis of high molecular polyethylene researchers from nust «MISIS»created a replacement bone — the outer layer is solid, and the interior is porous, which imitates a biological structure. It was obtained by combining the methods of solid-phase mixing and timepressure, and to create a been used supercritical fluid. Under certain conditions it is transformed from water to gas and evaporates, leaving pores, the content of which the material is 80%.

«This material is perfectly cut, which is very profitable for surgeons. He also possesses shape memory effect, that is, if you squeeze it, and then put in the right place, he «straightened». So it is possible to significantly reduce the time and complexity of the operation.», — said Fyodor Senate, candidate of physico-mathematical Sciences, researcher of the research center of composite materials nust «MISIS».

According to scientists, the period before the introduction of artificial joints and bones is 5-7 years. This is due to the need to spend a lot of preclinical testing before bulk production.

Also polyethylene may be used as artificial muscle — when cooled it contracts, and expands when warm that simulates the contraction and stretching of muscles. The material will be used not only for humans, but also to create the more flexible robots. The main issue is controlling the muscles and the dependence of the motion on the ambient temperature.
