The Council of Episcopal conferences of Europe welcomes the desire of the Belarusian side to take in the Minsk meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill, Chairman of the Council, Archbishop of Genoa cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

Earlier Thursday, the President of Belarus at the meeting with participants of the Minsk plenary meeting of the Council of Episcopal conferences of Europe proposed to be held in the Belarusian capital, meeting with the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill and Pope Francis.

«This re-encounter is anticipated and expected by all. We rejoice in the desire of Belarus to spend it here in Minsk,» — said Bagnasco after a meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday in Minsk. His words leads Agency BelTA.

The twelfth of February 2016 in Havana held a historic meeting of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill, the results of which a Joint statement was adopted. A meeting of this level was the first in the history of relations between the two churches.

The Council of Episcopal conferences of Europe, founded in 1971, brings together the presidents of the European Catholic bishops ‘ Conferences. The aim of the Council is a joint work of the Catholic bishops on issues of faith, issues of secularization and globalization, the development of missionary and social service and others. The Council also represents the interests of the Catholic Church in the European Parliament and various European Commission.
