The Moscow Patriarchate sent a letter to the Secretary of state Rex Tillerson in connection with the U.S. state Department report on alleged infringement of religious liberties in Russia, said on Friday, RIA Novosti Deputy Chairman of the Department for external Church relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate Archimandrite Philaret (Bulekov).

«The letter sent to the U.S. Embassy for transmission to the addressee», — said Archimandrite Filaret, adding that it is not about «open letter».

According to him, after receiving the state Secretariat of the text of the letter the Department will inform on its website, «basic positions of the Russian Church in relation to the report submitted in the letter.»

Previously head of sector for interreligious contacts of the Department for external Church relations (DECR), MP Dimitry Safonov said at a press conference that the Russian Orthodox Church is preparing a letter to Tillerson in connection with the «biased report,» the US state Department on alleged infringement of religious freedoms in Russia and a complete disregard of Washington’s persecution of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine.

Annual report of the US state Department on religious freedoms in the world was published in August.

In the report, as noted in OVTSS, in particular, the «not referred to numerous cases of arson of churches, beatings of priests and those bills that today Ukraine is preparing to take — completely discriminatory to all religious associations that do not have centers in Ukraine.»
