Employees of the national Park «Curonian spit» in the Kaliningrad region continue to eliminate the consequences of the fire, which occurred in 2014, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Director of the national Park Anatoliy Kalina.

«In the same year we planted about 10 acres of Scotch pine, in addition, there is self-seeding birch, the territory at the moment, natural fixed, and today there is no danger that the village of the Sea of sand. But every fall, the work continues and we sits, and it now remains only to wait for this to grow. To fully restore the forest to not less than 20 years», — said the Director.

He noted that during a fire burned about 13 acres of valuable timber. The damage caused to nature was estimated based on a list of criteria is the damage to the soil, and the amount of burned trees and their condition. The amount of damage exceeded 280 million rubles.

The largest over the last ten years, the fire on the territory of the national Park «Curonian spit» near the border with Lithuania occurred on 23 July 2014. In extinguishing were involved about 20 vehicles, including a helicopter, emergency, and more than 160 people. The alleged perpetrator of the fire, residents of Kaliningrad, who performed welding work in the yard in the village of morskoe, was declared wanted and detained almost a year later.

Police opened a criminal case article «deliberate destruction of forest plantings in especially large size». According to preliminary data, due to the violation of safety at carrying out of welding works ignited the grass, in hot and windy weather, the fire spread instantly.

Curonian spit is the smallest national Park in the country and the longest sand spit is almost 100 kilometers. It is a narrow strip of land between the Baltic sea and the Curonian lagoon. For its unique natural landscapes of the territory included in the list of UNESCO world heritage.
