NATO will continue policy of «open doors» to new members, said on Thursday the U.S. permanent representative to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison.

«We support a policy of «open doors,» she said during an interview with the Washington Post, which was broadcasted on the newspaper’s website. According to her, applicants «must meet the standards of democracy and specific military standards.»

Hutchison has promised to support Macedonia, which, according to her, «could be the next country that has stood the test of time.»

The US representative admitted that the accession of Macedonia to NATO must be acceptable to Greece. However, she expressed confidence that all issues will be resolved.

A serious obstacle on the way of integration to NATO and EU for Macedonia is the dispute with Greece about the name of the country. Athens achieve change of the name of the neighboring Republic, that it is not confused with the Greek region of Macedonia, and block the entry of Skopje in the EU and NATO. According to Greece, the name «Macedonia» reflects the policy of irredentism and may cause the territorial claims of Skopje.

While Athens wouldn’t mind if the word «Macedonia» to be supplemented with a geographical definition. Pending resolution of the dispute Greece needs to call the neighboring country «the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia» (FYROM), under the name of the country is in the UN. Hopes for a resolution of dispute arose with the coming to power in Skopje of the new leadership.
