The largest ever study of the Alaska-Chukotka population of polar bears, the cluster of these predators recorded during Russian-American research expedition to Wrangel sharp, reported RIA Novosti employee of the Department of environmental education of the reserve «Wrangel Island» Anastasia Petukhova.

Research on the study of polar bears conducted in the framework of the project Russian-American agreement On «cooperation for the conservation of species of wild flora and fauna and their habitats».

«Scientists recorded the maximum number of bears from the Alaska-Chukotka population for all time of its study – 589 bears,» — said Petukhov.

Scientists were monitoring during the month, and, according to them, the physical condition of polar bears is good, animals are well-fed. This season on the island were identified and selected wire traps to collect polar bear hair. Samples are further examined.

Earlier it was reported that the reserve was an unusually large number of bears – 181 individual eating the carcass of a bowhead whale near mount Thomas on the West coast of Wrangel island. According to Petukhova, it is also maximum for this figure.

Officer of the University of Washington, co-chair of the Russian-American working group Eric Reger noted that in the course of the work they have observed of polar bears on the island, which he personally had precipitous in Alaska. «Scientist hopes to continue to study bears in Chukotka and in the next year», — said the interlocutor.
