The President of Moldova Igor Dodon considers that the Parliament is not enough votes to approve a constitutional amendment changing the official language from Moldovan to Romanian.

Earlier, the faction of the liberal democratic party of Moldova proposed an amendment providing for the name change the official language from Moldovan to Romanian. Signatures to the initiative put 35 deputies of the 101-seat Parliament. The constitutional court of Moldova gives a positive opinion on the bill. The amendment will enter into force, if for it will vote two thirds of the deputies. The socialist leader had previously stated that he intends to block the initiative. Against changing the name of the language was made and the Party of socialists of Moldova, which until the election of a President was led by Igor Dodon.

«I am a supporter of the preservation of the Moldavian language (as it is written in the Constitution). But in Parliament there are proposals to change the Constitution in favor of the Romanian language. It will not work – we have already conducted relevant work. Order amendment is not passed, we have 35 members, we have 24 (fraction of socialists). But with 11 we have already spoken, and they do not vote for the Romanian initiative,» he stated in an interview with «Nezavisimaya Gazeta».

He added that supporters of the idea of unification of Moldova with Romania are working in the Republic is very active.

«Working with young people in schools. So here we need the state program of countering anti-state activities. And we’ll do it as soon as I take power completely (after the victory of the party of socialists in the parliamentary elections at the end of 2018, which is awaiting the President),» added Igor Dodon.

He recalled the legislative initiative, involving a ban in the country at the legislative level, all organizations that openly advocate the elimination of the statehood of Moldova. However, said the leader of Moldova, the Parliament does not want to vote for it. «But we’ll do it,» he stated.
