The team of the Institute of intelligent cybernetic systems, National research nuclear University MEPhI developed a system of continuous authentication of mobile device users based on behavioral biometrics. Using this method will ensure a high degree of protection from outside interference. The results are presented at several international conferences, told RIA Novosti press-service of the University.

One of the most popular systems to protect today’s mobile devices is authentication based on passwords, which creates inconvenience for users having to constantly enter a numeric or pattern.

The alternative is authentication by fingerprint, which also has significant drawbacks: attackers using malicious applications may copy images, fingerprints and even add your blocking device.

Specialists from NRNU MEPhI proposed algorithm is continuous authentication through behavioral biometrics. The advantage of this method is a continuous protection from outside interference without any additional action by the user.

Behavioral biometrics method allows to observe the intrinsic parameters of the person while handling the device, and to determine who uses a smartphone: the owner or another person. The fact that the style of handling the phone for each of us is unique and different — different people holding him, fingers interact with the touch screen, use apps. These characteristics suggest keep track of the specialists from NRNU MEPhI.

Based on the biometric parameters of the user authentication system is very convenient because, unlike passwords or fingerprint, a behavioral biometric features can’t be copied, lost or stolen. Consequently, prevent their forgery and achieves a high level of protection of the device from outside interference.

«The scientific novelty of our project is that to provide continuous authentication of mobile device users according to their behavioral biometric characteristics first applied technology for data analysis, machine learning and artificial neural networks. The sensitivity of the sensors used in modern smartphones, allows you to select the behavioral characteristics of each user and on the basis of aggregate data coming from the touchscreen and other sensors, use the authentication with high accuracy,» — said the project leader, associate Professor of «Cryptology and cyber security» MEPhI Konstantin Kogos.

The product may be of interest to developers of mobile devices and applications that require continuous user authentication, such as banking, enterprise applications and instant messengers.
