The Ambassador of Russia in Belgium has awarded the author of the book «Peter the Great in Belgium»

Russian Ambassador to Belgium Alexander Tokovinin on behalf of the Minister of foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov was awarded on Wednesday the breastplate of the Russian foreign Ministry «contribution to international cooperation» of the author of the book «Peter the Great in Belgium», Professor of the Catholic University of Leuven Emmanuel Fenix.

«I am convinced that the spirit of openness and strategic vision, which 300 years ago showed Peter, much in demand in the current international context, marked by uncertainties, when Europe and the world in General is at a crossroads,» said the Ambassador addressing the participants of the ceremony, during which the presentation of the French edition of the book.

The awarding was timed to the celebrations on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the visit by Peter the great Belgian lands in 1717.

«I did the work with great pleasure and satisfaction,» said for his part, Professor Fenix, noting that Peter was «an impressive first Russian sovereign and of such importance that visited our region.»

It is noteworthy that the stay of Peter I in the Belgian lands was his last voyage abroad.

In turn, the Director of the publishing house «Mémogramme» Luke Verton expressed the hope that «book «Peter the Great in Belgium» will be a cultural bridge for our peoples.»

Alexander Tokovinin also awarded the breastplates of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation «For interaction» honorary Governor of the province of liège, Michel Foret and the President of the Association «Fund of Peter the Great» Valery Dvoinikov for their personal contribution to the installation of the bronze statue of the first Russian Emperor in St. Peter’s square in the Belgian Liege. The opening ceremony of the monument took place in June of this year. The project was financed by the Embassy of Russia in Belgium, the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo, «Gazprom», «LUKOIL» and other organizations.

During the stay in the Belgian lands Peter the great visited Brussels, Antwerp, Ostend, Liege, NAMUR, Dinant and Spa. The first monument to the Russian monarch in Belgium was established in 1998 in Antwerp in the framework of the festival «Days of Peter the Great». In Brussels, in the Park next to the Royal Palace, Peter I have a small bust, donated in 1856 by Prince Demidov.
