Deputies of the Supreme Council of Latvia, which in 1990 voted for independence from the Soviet Union, has put the government in an awkward position – the independence Day of the Republic on 18 November at an official ceremony, they brought the flag of Catalonia, according to Sputnik Latvia.

About this event told the chief of the Latvian freedom fighter of Catalonia, journalist Otto Ozols on the page in Facebook.

According to him, «Escalada» has never appeared on the official celebration of independence Day until last Saturday, when the flag of Catalonia, sewn together with two flags of Latvia, brought to the ceremony.

More detailed videos of the action Ozols posted in his Twitter and provided signature in Catalan language: «Today we in Latvia celebrate independence Day. Members of the national resistance movement brought the official ceremony «escalado», surprising the President, Prime Minister and foreign diplomats.»

The news of this action was published in the Catalan newspaper El Nacional.

The position of the foreign Ministry of Latvia on recognition of independence of Catalonia is quite clear: it is an internal affair of Spain, which must be resolved in accordance with Spanish law.

According to the results of the referendum held on 1 October, the Parliament of Catalonia adopted a resolution on independence. In response, the Spanish Senate approved the introduction of direct rule of the Spanish authorities in the Autonomous community. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the suspension from office of members of the government of the autonomy, including the head of the Carles Pokdemon, the dissolution of the Parliament of the Autonomous community and the holding of early elections in Catalonia on December 21.
