Kiev guarantees safety for the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in case of his return to the country to participate in the trials, said the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of justice Pavel Petrenko.

Earlier the public Prosecutor of Ukraine Yury Lutsenko reported that the Agency is investigating more than 10 criminal cases against Yanukovych.

«Yanukovych has the opportunity to return to Ukraine and to present its position in court — the state will guarantee his safety» — Petrenko said in an interview with the daily online newspaper «Business capital», published on Monday.

According to him, the process against Yanukovych is developing in accordance with European standards of justice and has no political component.

«It (the process against Yanukovych — ed) occurs with clear standards of Ukrainian procedural law that meets international standards. It is open, provides opportunity of competitiveness, tolerance, protection and the opportunity to work the defendant a fugitive. It is for this reason that occurs absentee procedure for the consideration of the case,» the Minister added.

According to Petrenko, the former President has all possibilities to defend its position in court. He also expressed confidence that in the event of conviction Yanukovych «will sooner or later be arrested and transferred to the Ukrainian justice».
