The picture that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad gave to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is a demonstration of the secular nature of Syria as a state, said RIA Novosti Deputy Director of the Museum of the East Tigran Mkrtychev.

On the eve of the Assad visit Sochi, where he held talks with Putin and the leadership of the Ministry of defence and General staff of the armed forces. At the meetings, al-Assad thanked the Russian leadership for «the salvation of Syria.»

During the talks, Assad gave Putin a gift of a painting, which in the traditional manner of the Arab East written in small text. Presentation of a gift was broadcast by Russian television channels.

«This gift to the President of the Russian Federation, I think, is a very interesting gesture, a demonstration of the secular nature of the state of Syria. The fact that in Islamic tradition there is no figurative fine art, but has a very wide spread of calligraphy. And the picture that gave Bashar al-Assad, Vladimir Putin, it is precisely part of this tradition of calligraphy, which is common in the Islamic world,» said Mkrtychev.

Thus, according to him, the work of art is framed as a painting that is a Testament to the secularism of the state.
