The latter reported that at the end of September was observed extremely high air pollution radioactive isotope ruthenium-106. Exceedances recorded in the southern Urals, Tatarstan, the Volga region and Rostov-on-don.

In the samples of all the posts in the southern Urals have discovered the isotope Ru-106 (half-life 368,2 day).

It is reported that the content of ruthenium in the sample and the observational points of Argayash and Novogornyy exceeded the background in the previous month and 986 440 times. This corresponds to the level of «extreme pollution».

In addition, in late September, the decay products of the radioisotope is detected in Tatarstan, Volgograd and Rostov-on-don.

Following that, from 29 September to 3 October, the content of ruthenium-106 found all European countries, starting with Italy and further North in Europe, said the Roshydromet.

Earlier, the German office for radiation protection recorded in Europe traces of a radioactive substance in a safe for the population concentration.

The office suggested that the source is allegedly in Russia, the southern Urals, without specifying, on the basis of which to make such conclusions. The laboratory of Russian regions said they did not record the last time the air content of ruthenium-106.

This substance is used as a radiation source for procedures for the treatment of cancer. Less frequently it is used in radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which are used in the satellite. It can also occur in the processing of nuclear fuel elements.

The Plant «Mayak»

According to Greenpeace, in the report of Roshydromet in September indicated that the most significant concentration of ruthenium-106 found near the plant «Mayak», where the processed spent nuclear fuel. It is located in the city of Ozersk, Chelyabinsk region

In turn, the company said that the possible pollution of the atmosphere isotope is not related to their activities.

As later stated in the «Rosatom» on the Russian objects of nuclear industry, there was no incidents and accidents, which could lead to increased levels of radioactive substances in the atmosphere.

The level of non-hazardous

In turn, the authorities of Chelyabinsk said that the Rosgidromettsentrom reported elevated radiation levels in September.

As stated by the Minister of public security of the region Evgeny Savchenko, the Ministry should warn of the dangerous races of the radiation level. This is to protect the population in case of emergency.

The meteorologist answered that the recorded fluctuations of background radiation, but the level is nowhere near the threat, said Savchenko.

«No threat»

This is also the opinion of the Deputy Director for science of the Institute of industrial ecology Ural branch of RAS Ilya Yarmoshenko.

According to him, the concentration of ruthenium-106 is a no-brainer for people living in this and neighboring regions.

Yarmoshenko said that it is permissible for the security of the concentration of ruthenium is about 4.4 becquerels per cubic meter in the monitoring data it is a hundred times less.

«Of course, the evacuation of the people in this case is not necessary», — said the Agency interlocutor.

According to the scientist, the question arises of what caused the increase in the level of ruthenium in the atmosphere.
