The Supreme court of Kyrgyzstan upheld the first instance verdict, leader of opposition party «ATA-Meken» Omurbek Tekebaev, who received eight years of imprisonment for corruption and accepting bribes, but the court has considered possible to apply the Amnesty, which the term of imprisonment may be reduced, the decision on Tuesday announced judicial Board of VS of the country.

One of the most famous in Kyrgyzstan, the politicians, the leader of the opposition parliamentary faction of the socialist party «ATA Meken» Tekebayev was arrested in the airport of Bishkek in February, when returning from a session of the OSCE parliamentary Assembly in Vienna. At the same time was detained the former Ambassador of the Republic of Duyshonkul Chotonov. Politicians were accused of corruption according to the statement of Russian businessman Leonid Maevsky. He said that in 2010 Tekebayev, the Deputy Chairman of the Kyrgyz interim government, brokered Chotonova, received from him a million dollars bribe, promising to give admission to the management of the largest Kyrgyz mobile operator CJSC «Alfa Telecom» (brand Megacom), but a promise not kept.

Judicial Board of the Supreme court recognised fault of defendants proved and upheld the decision of may day court, which in August condemned Tekebayev and Cotonou to 8 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property and the inability to continue to occupy government positions for three years.

The judicial Board has considered possible to apply concerning Tekebayev and Cotonou Amnesty, which resulted in the prison term would be significantly reduced.

During debate of the parties the convicts ‘ lawyers said that the court verdicts against their clients are of a political nature, and did not rule out their appeal in international courts.
