Chief Rabbi of Moscow, President of the Council of European rabbis Pinchas Goldschmidt called on to defend the religious community of the Jews in Europe, located between «two fires» nationalism and Islamic extremism.

The chief rabbis of Europe met in Monaco at the next conference of the rabbinical Council of Europe to discuss the growing problem of anti-Semitism and «anti-religious» regulation in Europe. The conference will be held in the new synagogue the Edmond Safra.

«I repeatedly repeated that the European Jewish community is between «two fires» — religious intolerance involved, including nationalism, and Islamic extremism. Nationalism for many it has become a response to the terrorism emanating from religious extremists. But the religious community should not suffer for it, to become «collateral damage.» We need to find a way to protect religious communities that lived and flourished in Europe since the Second world war. Meeting in Monaco is a chance for us to reflect and to take action to ensure the continued life and prosperity of community», — quotes the words of Rabbi by his press service.

The conference also signed the «Memorandum of understanding and cooperation» between the rabbinical Council of Europe and the U.S. Commission for the preservation of America’s heritage abroad. The agreement States support and cooperation of organizations in the exchange of information about monuments, cemeteries, burial grounds and synagogues in Eastern and Central Europe, and also in the sphere of preservation of historical monuments, places of mass graves of victims of the Holocaust and repression. The agreement was signed by the Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and the Chairman of the US Commission for the preservation of America’s heritage abroad Floor Packer.

«Today in Europe there are more than 11,000 Jewish cemeteries. Many of them are in places where Jewish communities no longer exist, respectively, they are without supervision and care. We want to preserve this memory. It is important, first and foremost, to the authorities have adopted a law on the preservation of these places. However, there is a tendency just to build them. The signed Memorandum is not just an agreement on cooperation and exchange of information and mutual support, aimed at preserving the memory of the victims of Nazism», — said the Chairman of the rabbinical Council of Europe
