The area of forest fires in Russia in 2017 compared with last year decreased by 44% to 1.4 million hectares, said on Wednesday Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin at the meeting on the outcome of the fire season in the forests in the current year and goals for 2018.

Khloponin noted, the main territory of the forest Fund has established a typical for November, cold weather, certain regions have recorded outbreaks of forest fires, but they are quickly eliminated.

«This year, in forests recorded 9.2 thousand fires, almost a thousand fires less than last year, i.e. a reduction of 10%. The reduction of forest fires amounted to 44% — up to 1.4 million hectares,» — said Khloponin.

According to him, the damage from forest fires has decreased from 24 billion rubles to 15 billion rubles.
