. Scientists from the Institute of theoretical and experimental Biophysics RAS, Pushchino proved that triclosan, an antibiotic recently banned in the EU and USA germicidal soap, starts the self-destruct sequence in mammalian cells, according to a paper published in the journal BBA – Biomembranes.

«For a long time it was thought that triclosan is harmless to humans and animals. It is used in various Soaps and cosmetics. Recently, the US has banned the use of triclosan in liquid and solid soap. He began to meet much less frequently and we have. However, in hospitals triclosan still used in sanitary products», — says Konstantin Belosludtsev of ITEB RAS, whose words the press service of the Institute.

This antibiotic was opened in the mid-1960s, and he almost immediately became widely used to combat bacterial and fungal infections. He was considered harmless to humans for one simple reason – its molecules inhibit the operation of the bacterial ENR enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids required for the repair of cellular membranes and walls.

In humans and other multicellular creatures this enzyme is missing, which scientists believed that triclosan can act on the cells of humans and mammals. For this reason, this substance was widely used not only in medicine but also in the production of cosmetics, Soaps and other hygiene products, especially in the last 20 years. Recently biologists have found that triclosan causes hormonal disorders and allergies, causing its circulation and use was severely limited.

Belosludtsev and his colleagues found that triclosan can cause massive cell death, watching as the molecules in the antibiotic affect liver cells of rats and their mitochondria – a kind of «power plants» of cells responsible for the production of ATP, the universal cellular energoalmaty.

How to tell the scientists, biologists long enough I suspect that the negative effects of triclosan may be associated with the fact that his molecules are able to disrupt the mitochondria and cause «holes» in their shells, through which the cage fall special signaling molecules, forcing her to initiate apoptosis, a program of cell «suicide».

Russian Biophysics checked whether this is so in fact, observing changes in the work and appearance of mitochondria with the appearance of the triclosan molecules in their vicinity.

Further experiments have shown that triclosan can penetrate such «holes» not only in mitochondria but also in other isolated cellular structures with a double membrane. As scholars have noted, in practice this could mean that the triclosan can be even more harmful to humans and other multicellular animals than for microbes.

«We plan to see how triclosan and its metabolites and products of biodegradation affect living organisms. It is known that these compounds are able to significantly accumulate in tissues of aquatic organisms. So you need to check if under the action of triclosan change the functional parameters of the mitochondria aquatic organisms, it influence their survival,» concludes Belosludtsev.
