. Scientists from the USA found documents showing that producers of sugar and sugary drinks at the end of the 1960s, knew that sugar can cause atherosclerosis and bladder cancer, but concealed this information from the public, according to a paper published in the journal PLoS Biology.

«Such a manipulation of the scientific process is very similar to what you do to the manufacturers of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Our finding casts doubt on the fact that all studies that are sponsored by manufacturers of sugar and sugary drinks, can be taken seriously when preparing new policy measures,» said Stanton Glantz (Glantz Stanton) from the University of California in San Francisco (USA).

According to current who data, in the world, since the 80s of last century, today there is a global obesity epidemic. Last year, every third inhabitant of the globe, a total of 1.9 billion people, suffered from extra pounds, and about 15% from severe forms of obesity. According to the organization, 47% of diseases, for example cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer, are directly linked to obesity.

One of the main «distributors» of this epidemic as it is today according to doctors and scientists, it is sugar and sweet drinks became widely popular in the recent years worldwide. Two years ago researchers from the US found that excessive consumption of soft drinks each year, resulting in the death of approximately 184 thousand people. Most of these deaths occur in Latin America and the United States.

Manufacturers of such products does not plan to abandon their business or to change it. As recently discovered by scientists from Boston University, today they spend a lot of money on promotion of their interests in nearly 100 health care organizations in the United States, which hindered the establishment of high prices for soda or limitation of its turnover.

Glantz and his colleagues at the University found the first evidence that sugar and gazirovanye company knew about the negative properties of their products, but chose not to inform the audience, learning of the grant files and data of experiments that were conducted in the last half century under the auspices of the International Foundation for the study of sugar (ISRF).

Studying the documents and working notes left by scientists whose work is sponsored ISRF, a team of glanza came across an interesting experiment, «Project 259», held at the University of Birmingham by Professor Walter Pover (Pover Walter) from 1967 to 1971.

In these experiments, as discovered by the American biologists, Pover and his colleagues watched how a diet consisting almost entirely of pure sugar, affect the metabolism and the health of the heart and vessel of several dozen rats, not suffering from disease or congenital genetic defects. According to the fashion of the time, the animals spent their entire lives in hermetically sealed chambers that was supposed to protect them from the action of microbes and other external factors that can skew the results of the experiment.

His experiments quickly enough revealed two «new» negative effect associated with sugar — it not only contributed to the development of obesity, but also accelerated the accumulation of triglycerides and other fats in the blood of rodents, increasing the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis and other heart problems and blood vessels. In addition, he found evidence that large doses of sugar contribute to the development of some forms of bladder cancer.

Four months before the completion of the experiments and publish their findings, representatives of the ISRF visited the laboratory Povera and learned about its preliminary findings. They, apparently, did not like the sponsors in the next valuation of the grant they put the British biologist, a rating of «zero» immediately cut off funding for his experiments, and these negative properties of sugar the public found out only last year, when was published the «first» evidence that sugar may cause cancer in rodents.
