The case of the KGB of Belarus against Ukrainian journalist Paul Sharoika on charges of espionage, is triggered by and affects the relations of the two countries, said Ukrainian Ambassador to Minsk Igor Kizim, expressing hope that «everything will end soon» and the parties come to a mutually acceptable solution.

On Monday, the Belarusian KGB has confirmed the arrest of Ukrainian journalist Paul Sharoika and charged with espionage and the creation in Belarus of a secret network. In this case the employee of the Ukrainian Embassy in Minsk Igor Skvortsov declared persona non grata in Belarus for «incompatible with diplomatic status activities». In response, Kiev sent the Belarusian diplomat.

«It is obvious that nothing good for our relationship there is… a positive image of Belarus in the eyes of ordinary Ukrainians falls. Not so much the image of people as the image of power», — said the Ambassador] in an interview with Euroradio, published on Wednesday on its website.

According to him, after the incident, «even some visits were suffering.»

«You can say that some officials from the government (of Ukraine) decided not to travel to Belarus yet. It will negatively affect the development of the whole cooperation», — continued the diplomat.

He expressed the hope that «this will be over soon» and the parties come to a mutually acceptable solution.

«We need to renew the level of trust which plummeted following the incidents last time with Paul Sharoika and Paul Mushroom (Ukrainian disappeared in the summer from the territory of Belarus and, according to the statements of the Ukrainian side, is now in jail in Russia — ed.),» said Kizim.

«The fact that this incident (with Sharoika – ed.) provoked, I’m a hundred percent. Have initiated action to create the situation that we have today», — he added.
