Unique for Primorye, the reforestation project for the burned in wildfires territories started in the national Park «Land of leopard» – the habitat of the endangered Amur leopard, told RIA Novosti the representative of the national Park.

«Every year, fire affects hundreds of hectares of habitat of the Amur leopard – the rarest big cat in the world. Fire burns often burn all the vegetation, including young trees, and as a result such areas become uninhabitable for wild animals,» — said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, exploration of the wildlife conservation Society, WWF and the Pacific Institute of geography Feb RAS became the basis for a new project «Land of leopard». Scientists study seed composition «burn scars» — forest soils post-fire. It is expected that by 2019, experts will create fitocenose – list of geobotanical descriptions of vegetation in the burned areas. The scientists also will explore the trees growing on a burnt fire stations.

In addition, a number of pilot sites, which will remove the top layer of soil – sod. During the next few years the specialists will monitor the recovery of vegetation in the burned areas.

«According to preliminary hypothesis, the updated parts of the soil will quickly be overgrown woody vegetation. If this hypothesis is confirmed, the question arises for carrying out such rehabilitation works in all areas of the national Park «Land of leopard». And this, in turn, will help to return the forest the world’s rarest wild cat,» he added.
