American citizen Aijalon Mali Gomez, detained in North Korea in 2010 and released with the assistance of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, has died in California after he was found on fire, according to the TV station KPBS.

The incident occurred at night on Saturday. As reported by the police of the city of San Diego, a local policeman, who was off duty, noticed a burning man in the area near the road and called for assistance. Even before arrival of physicians Gomez died.

«Preliminary investigation shows that this is not a murder but rather an accidental death or suicide,» said police spokesman Todd Griffin. According to him, an accurate conclusion can be made after the completion of forensic investigations.

Gomez is originally from Boston, in 2010, he was sentenced by a North Korean court for illegally crossing the border from China, and «hostile activity» to eight years of hard labor and fined 700 thousand dollars. Before entering North Korea, he taught English in South Korea.

After arrival in the DPRK, Jimmy Carter and Gomes was released. The North Korean news Agency reported that the American was pardoned on the personal orders of Kim Jong-Il. While in custody in the DPRK, local media reported on attempts by Gomez to commit suicide.
