The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during the visit to Brussels for the summit of «Eastern partnership» will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the leadership of the EU institutions, said on Thursday the press service of the Ukrainian President.

«The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko started a two-day working visit to Brussels to participate in the fifth summit of «Eastern partnership» During the visit stipulates negotiations of the President of Ukraine with the leadership of the EU institutions, the leaders of member States of the EU and the partner countries of «Eastern partnership». It is also planned a meeting with the NATO Secretary General and the audience with the king of Belgium,» reads a statement on the website of the President.

According to the press service, Poroshenko will speak at a plenary session on the theme: «the time of the Riga summit and the setting of new priorities.» In addition, it is also planned the President during a working lunch with the participation of heads of States and governments of EU and partner countries on the theme: «Working together on common European challenges.»

Later, the press service said that Poroshenko meeting with king Philippe of Belgium has already taken place. The Ukrainian President at the meeting expressed the hope that Belgium will continue to support Ukraine on the path of EU integration.

Kiev has long sought the granting Ukraine the prospect of EU membership. The Ukrainian side insisted on the inclusion of this remark in the Association agreement, but this did not happen. Ukraine’s leadership has always declared that the policy of European and Euro-Atlantic integration is unchanged, and expects that in future the country will become an EU member. Ukraine signed the Association agreement and free trade area with the EU in June 2014 simultaneously with Moldova and Georgia. In the same year on a provisional basis, some began to act a political part of the agreements.

From January 1, 2016 came into force almost all the provisions concerning the establishment of a free trade zone. In may, the Parliament of the Netherlands the last of the legislative bodies of the EU have ratified the Association agreement, which allowed from 1 September to launch the agreement in full.

However, as stated by the European Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement Johannes Hahn, talking about Ukraine’s membership in the European Union in the coming years is unrealistic, Kiev should focus on the implementation of the Association agreement with the EU.
