Parliamentarians of Russia and the European Union agree that sanctions should not extend to the deputies, said Wednesday the Deputy Chairman of the state Duma of the Russian Federation Olga Epifanova.

«We find it unacceptable to impose sanctions on parliamentarians. They are representatives of their peoples, and that they are communicating with each other, can be extremely useful for the solution of conflict situations. Can leave on the problem area or to meet a community where there are problems or conflicts,» she said to Russian journalists after meetings in Brussels with several MEPs in the framework of the 5th parliamentary forum of the Northern dimension.

According to Epifanova, «the fact that today we are holding these meetings, this is great progress, because for several years on the parliamentary track of the EU was complete silence.»

«We talked with the French, Finns, Norwegians, and they all say they’ve had enough of this confrontation, we lose the opportunities we must create for the world,» said the MP, Recalling that the parliamentary cooperation Committee EU-Russia stopped its work in 2014.

In turn, the Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee on ecology and environmental protection Yelena Serova noted that not all European parliamentarians do not belong to Russia. «There are parliamentarians who support our country and are willing to cooperate. But I understand that for various reasons they are forced to remain silent,» she said.

The Northern dimension in external and cross-border policy of the EU covers the Baltic sea region, the Arctic and North-West Russia. In accordance with EU documents, the program brings together Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Baltic States and Poland, and Karelia, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Leningrad, Pskov, Novgorod, Vologda, Kaliningrad region of Russia and Saint Petersburg. The initiative was aimed at solving specific problems of these regions and to strengthen cooperation between countries-members of EU and Russia.

Finland took the initiative implementation in the framework of EU program «Northern dimension» in September 1997. In June 1999, this concept has received the status of official strategies of the European Union.
