Deputies of the Tatarstan state Council will continue to consider the teaching and learning of the state languages of the Republic and the native languages of the peoples living there at the meeting on November 29, reported RIA Novosti in the press service of the Parliament.

Parents of students in Tatarstan Republic in recent months initiated a collective appeal to the leadership of educational institutions, ministries of education of Tatarstan and Russia, the Prosecutor’s office, refusing the obligatory teaching of the Tatar language to their children or requiring to reduce the number of lessons of this subject. Many parents complained about the insufficient number of lessons of the Russian language.

Question about the teaching and learning of state languages of Tatarstan (Russian and Tatar) and the native languages of the peoples living in the Republic, was introduced by deputies in the agenda of session of Parliament on 26 October due to the large public outcry. It was agreed to consider the issue at a separate meeting. Most parliamentarians were concerned that this situation divides society on linguistic and ethnic lines. In addition, the schools simultaneously with public Prosecutor’s checks have begun to change the curriculum and adjust the learning process. The question arose with the reduction of teachers of the Tatar language and literature.

At the meeting of Parliament on 8 November the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov informed that currently with the Federal government discusses the introduction of a new Federal standard, according to which along with the native language should appear such a thing as a state language of the Republic. In this case, the Tatar language as a state language of Tatarstan should be mandatory in primary and General school two hours a week, students will be able to choose further study of the native language – Russian, Tatar, Mari, Chuvash, or any other, and in the senior classes the study of the Tatar may be voluntary.

The members decided to continue meeting for consideration after obtaining clarification from the Federal Ministry of education and science.

«In the 33rd meeting on 8 November was adjourned. The meeting will continue on 29 November. Secretary of the state Council Lilia Mavrina reminded that the agenda of the meeting was the question of the teaching and learning of the state languages of the Republic of Tatarstan and the native languages of the peoples living in the Republic. On the proposal of the parliamentary committees of the agenda of the further meeting will also be extended to parliamentarians intend to discuss 14 issues, including the budget bill of the Republic», — said the Agency interlocutor will be held on Friday the meeting of the Presidium of the state Council of the Republic.

The Ministry of education and science of Tatarstan, in September giving clarification on the issue of education of the Tatar language in educational institutions, noted that the Constitution gives regions the right to establish state languages of subjects of the Russian Federation and the Tatarstan Constitution as the official languages of the Republic established Russian and Tatar languages. Accordingly, the Tatar language as a compulsory subject to be studied in all educational institutions of Tatarstan. Thus, according to the Ministry, measures are being taken to improve the methods and technologies of teaching of the Tatar language. The Ministry reported that «the decision on raising from 1 January 2018 the volume of Russian language study to the volumes recommended by the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation».
