The Sejm of Poland sent for revision the draft law amending the procedure for the election of local authorities, the correspondent of RIA Novosti.

The Sejm voted agreed with the proposal of the opposition and sent the draft law back for revision to the relevant Commission.

Among the changes are the most significant limitation to two terms of office Voitov (heads of rural territorial units) and mayors. In addition, the organization of the elections will now take the State electoral Commission, so officials are applying for a senior position, will not be able to prepare the elections independently.

Also the voting process, in accordance with the bill, will be webcast live, and the polling stations set transparent ballot boxes.

The reform of local government, about the possibility of which in the beginning of 2017, said the leader of «Law and justice» Jaroslaw Kaczynski, previously met sharp criticism from the opposition. The head of the parliamentary faction of the largest opposition party, «Civic platform» Slawomir Neumann has called the proposal «an attack on local governments», and the party leader Grzegorz Schetyna was accused Kaczynski in pursuit of centralization of power and promised to do everything to prevent this.

The question of the reform has been raised repeatedly in the course of mass protests that took place in Poland during the year for various occasions — from the authorities ‘ intention to tighten the law on abortion to «anti-Polish» by members of the ruling party.
