More 40 thousand video cameras may be used for observation at the polling stations and territorial election commissions during the elections of the President of Russia in 2018, said the head of the CEC of Russia Ella Pamfilova.

«Almost unprecedented surveillance. I ask this figure to 40 thousand cameras — not to use because they may be more», — Pamfilova said in the debate on public surveillance in the framework of all-Russian civil forum.

She recalled that the CEC has set the task that the cameras were in areas that cover at least 80% of the country’s voters.

The state Duma on Friday passed in final third reading a law that allows members of the Public chamber of Russia to be observers in the presidential elections and provides for video surveillance of the vote count. The law provides for the possibility of placing video surveillance and broadcasting of images in premises of territorial election commissions in establishing the results of voting by them. Thus, with the adoption of the surveillance law would be possible not only in voting but in the counting of votes.

Regular elections of the President of Russia will be held in March 2018, the campaign is supposed to start in December 2017.
