In Washington celebrated 35 years of the glorification of the Montreal Iveron icon of the Mother of God

Orthodox believers of Washington said Friday the 35 anniversary of the canonization of the Montreal Iveron icon of the Mother of God, who became one of the main shrines of the Russian Diaspora.

Liturgy, dedicated to this event was celebrated in the Russian Church of Saint John the Baptist.

Montreal icon began to stream myrrh 24 Nov 1982 in Montreal at the house of an Orthodox Chilean Joseph Munoz-Cortes. For 15 years she exuded myrrh almost continuously.

Brother Joseph was killed on 31 October 1997 in Athens, then disappeared icon. Presumably, the day before his death he gave it to friends. The faithful believe that the icon has returned to Athos, where it was written.

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Washington, DC became the first outside of Canada, where in 1982 he was brought to the Montreal icon.

Speaking in this Friday sermon, Manhattan Bishop Nicholas (Olhovsky) called the Montreal Iveron icon special. «Many of us remember this marvelous icon. It is a miracle of God,» he said.

Liturgy, collected, despite it being a weekday, many people took place in the presence of another miraculous icon, the Kursk Root icon of the Mother of God, which is the guide of the Russian Diaspora.

As said Bishop Nicholas, the icon «for almost 100 years, borders the Russian Diaspora and the entire Orthodox world.» He noted that the Kursk icon, which resides in new York, «is constantly on the road.»

According to him, this year the Kursk icon visited churches of the German, British and Eastern-American dioceses of the Russian Church Abroad. In September, she traditionally visited the Kursk. «Tens of thousands of people in the land of Kursk came to worship this great Shrine,» said the Bishop.
