Pope Francis said he was praying for Ukraine, because the power of faith can help to heal the wounds of the past and encourage the movement to the world.

Turning from traditional preaching to the many pilgrims gathered Sunday in St. Peter’s square at the Vatican, the Pontiff greeted the faithful in Ukraine, where Saturday was a Day of remembrance of famine victims.

«I greet the Ukrainian community, which remembers the tragedy of the Holodomor, death by starvation, provoked by Stalin’s regime with millions of victims. Pray for Ukraine, because the power of faith can contribute to healing the wounds of the past and promote today the path to peace,» said Pope Francis.

The famine of 1932-1933 covered the main grain regions of the USSR: Ukraine, North Caucasus, Lower and middle Volga region, a considerable part of the Central Chernozem region, Kazakhstan, Western Siberia, southern Urals. Then, according to various estimates, killed from 7 to 8 million people, of which 3-3. 5 million — in Ukraine, 2 million in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, 2-2,5 million in the RSFSR.
