Russian human rights defenders called on the authorities to abide by the Constitution

The leader of the movement «For human rights» Lev Ponomarev and the head of the Moscow Helsinki group (MHG) Lyudmila Alekseeva has called for observance of the norms of the Constitution of the Russian Federation in the joint statement, read out by Ponomariov at the opening of the all-Russian Congress in defense of human rights.

«We need to unite around the main achievement of the early 90-ies — the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which is Central to the preservation of the rights and freedoms of citizens», — announced statement Ponomarev.

The human rights activist added that this slogan has been a staple for those who became «pioneers» of the human rights movement in the country in Soviet times.

The joint statement also noted that Russia continues which started in the late 80-ies of the transformation of authoritarian States to democratic ones. However, according to human rights, this process has gone «backwards.»
