Harmful habits of the mother can irreparably affect the health of the child. As found by Australian researchers, Smoking during pregnancy can lead to the development of fetal cerebral palsy. This is stated in an article published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience.

«Observations have shown that expectant mothers better to quit Smoking for several months or even years before pregnancy, in order not to hurt the baby. Smoking affects the quality of eggs before fertilization», — quotes the portal, Science Alert, the words of the authors of the study.

After experiments on mice, the experts came to the conclusion that the greatest danger to the fetus is oxidative stress. It is a condition of excess free radicals in the body that occur under the influence of harmful factors, bad ecology, stress, lots of physical activity or tobacco smoke.

The study showed that children born to mothers who were exposed to tobacco smoke, weak limbs and poor memory. Scientists believe that increased oxidative stress is mostly caused by the fact that mitochondria are not producing enough antioxidants to «clean up» of free radicals.

The researchers suggest that Smoking deprives the mother of the still unborn fetus of the necessary oxygen. Its lack can lead to hypoxia «oxygen and blood starvation» of the cells, for example, in parts of the brain responsible for memory and movement, and to their death. Similarly, there are processes that lead to the development of cerebral palsy, experts conclude.
