Chinese doctors performed the world’s first successful surgery to implant printed on 3D-printer of the knee joint of the tantalum to the hospital of the city under Central authority Chongqing in southwest China, according to the Central television of China.

The first patient was a 84-year-old Zhang Tinggui that the day after the operation was able to move my leg.

The TV channel notes that in recent years individual 3D-printed prostheses have become one of the main trends in technology for dentistry, they help to reduce the likelihood of postoperative infections, as well as the time and complexity of the operation. In this regard, an increasing number of Chinese surgeons suggest their patients to use this new technology.

It is reported that in traditional operations on the knee joint the surgeon must select the appropriate implant from a number of prostheses of standard size, and then during the procedure they have to «adjust» the prosthesis for each patient individually.

Most prosthetic knee joints made of titanium alloy, since the melting point of tantalum is too high for their mass production on the majority of the market 3D printers, but the individual implants of tantalum have a higher density than titanium counterparts, which provides better initial stability. Also, these devices simplify the operation, shorten its duration and risks of complications.

This is not China’s first operation to implant printed on 3D-printer implants. Earlier in November, the doctors of the Shanghai clinics have successfully replaced the fourth cervical vertebra in one patient the prosthesis is manufactured on a 3D printer.
