The arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, which will be held this week in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, will emphasize the important role of the Church in modern society and attention to the historical context: the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the Patriarchate in Russia and the tragic revolutionary events of October 1917. About this, commenting on the upcoming event, told RIA Novosti the head of the Synodal Department of the Moscow Patriarchate on relations of the Church with society and mass-media Vladimir Legoyda.

Earlier, the press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov has told RIA Novosti that Putin plans to visit the Episcopal Cathedral.

«In recent years when a Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, the head of state refers to the participants with a greeting,» — said Legoyda.

According to him, the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is held every few years (according to the Charter not less than once in four years), receives greetings from leaders of several other countries of the canonical responsibility of the Moscow Patriarchate. «The attention of the secular power to the Church life speaks of the important role played by the Church in modern society,» — said Legoyda.

He recalled that the meeting of the President with the bishops took place in the past, but before they took place in the Kremlin. «In this case, the President decided to come to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, where the Council of bishops. It seems that it emphasizes the special relation to the Church, a high estimation of its value in the life of state and society as a whole», — said the Agency interlocutor.

The Council of bishops-2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of 1917-1918 and the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the Patriarchate in Russia after more than 200 years of the Synodal period (subordination of Church to state). And the arrival of the President of such a Council, according to Legoyda, «it is also the attention of the state and to the historical context in which it takes place». «We not only remember the 100th anniversary of the events of October 1917, but also the 100th anniversary of the local Council, and the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the Patriarchate», — said the representative of the Church.

Due to the fact that the Cathedral is dedicated to these dates, it is planned that in Moscow there will arrive delegations of all local Orthodox churches in the world (globally 15). And most of them will lead their heads. «The arrival of the head of state at such a meeting, expected to become a Testament to the attention to world Orthodoxy», — said Legoyda.
