The European Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement, Johannes Hahn, expressed the readiness of member States to consider joining the new bloc of countries in the Balkan region, the newspaper Wiener Zeitung.

«Among participating countries is currently more willing to consider the extension. After all, it is recognized that it is possible to bring peace to the Balkans, and the prospect of EU accession is key to this,» said Khan in an interview.

In late October, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, said about the need to save for Western Balkan countries the prospect of EU membership for European security in General. Earlier, the head of the European Commission said it expects the expansion of the EU from 2019 to 2024, once the EU will leave the UK. Juncker has repeatedly stated that EU enlargement during its presidency, which expires in 2019, will not happen.

The EU has granted the status of accession of Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. In February 2016 a formal application for EU accession was filed by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
