In the court of Celle in Northern Germany, the decision explained: «based On the expert opinion of the regional Supreme court held that a convicted person, despite his advanced age, must serve four years punishment in jail.» It is noted that the conclusion does not violate the rights of Groening: former accountant of the concentration camp and SS officer will provide all necessary medical care.

Oskar Groening was sentenced in July 2015: then he was recognized as involved in the murder of 300,000 people and was sentenced to four years in prison. However, two years he lived at home, and until recently it was not known whether he will go to jail. In August 2017 the Prosecutor of Hanover has rejected a request by Groening for a continuance and stated that the offender «shall be imprisoned».

During the Second world war, Groening worked as an accountant at Auschwitz: he was counting money prisoners who later were sent to the coordinating office in Berlin. Groening has never denied his work in the camp and admitted that he was involved in the destruction of the people. His testimony is considered important from a historical point of view, because evidence of crimes of the Nazi regime.
