South Korea is considering closer cooperation with Russia in the Arctic, including in the development of the marine ways and ship building, the report said South Korean foreign Ministry, published on Wednesday following the meeting in Seoul diplomats of the two countries.

The parties were represented by ambassadors for special assignments of the foreign ministries of the Republic of Korea and Russia, Kim Yong Jun and Vladimir Barbin.

In particular, at the present meeting discussed the policy of the two countries in the Arctic, scientific cooperation, and the development of Arctic sea lanes, cooperation in shipbuilding, including the creation of a second research icebreaker, the participation of South Korea in the project «Yamal LNG».

According to the foreign Ministry of South Korea, Seoul considers Russia an important partner in cooperation in the Arctic among the eight countries of the Arctic Council. Via the Arctic ocean Koreans hope to lay a sea route from Busan port to Rotterdam, which will shorten the distance for cargo delivery to Europe by 32%.
