The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) remains a self-governing part of the Moscow Patriarchate, changes in the Charter of the Russian Orthodox Church are of a technical nature, said to RIA Novosti, the press Secretary of Patriarch Kirill, the priest of Alexander Volkov.

As previously reported, the Council of bishops separately prescribed in the Charter of the Russian Orthodox Church, that is the control center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Kiev

«Adopted by the Council of bishops of the changes to the Charter are more technical in nature, since the position of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was in the General head of self-governing churches, and in this regard created a number of inconveniences associated with the proper understanding of its provisions», — said Volkov.

According to him, «now the situation about the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in a separate Chapter, which, however, does not change its status — it was and remains a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church.»

Ukraine currently operates the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).

The current Charter of the Russian Orthodox Church the status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church spelled out in paragraph 18 of Chapter XI, entitled «a self-governing Church». As noted by Metropolitan Onufry, the item «does not fully displays the definition of the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990 on granting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church independence and autonomy in its management». The Metropolitan of Kiev in this regard, in particular, proposed the creation of a separate Chapter of the Statute of the ROC under the name «Ukrainian Orthodox Church». In the text broadcast of the meeting of the Council of bishops stating that the proposal of Metropolitan Onufriy «adopted unanimously».
