Monitoring brain «phone addicts» showed that the fad gadgets changes its chemical balance and manner of work — that is, brings this form of addiction with real addiction, said scientists who spoke at the annual meeting of the Radiological society of North America.

«Development of smartphone addiction leads to increased concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid, the main «brakes» of the brain, the anterior cingulate cortex and the disruption of the balance between GABA and glutamate, another important signaling molecule in the nervous system. The study of this process can help to understand how there are other types of addiction,» said Hyun-Suk SEO (Seo Hyung Suk) from the Korean University in Seoul.

In recent years, scientists seriously interested in the two new forms of addiction, which often say townsfolk: telephone and Internet»addiction.» Their study shows that the critics are partly right: some gadget lovers are actually observed specific changes in behavior, characteristic for the real addicts, and they are subject to the same risk factors.

For example, last year the researchers found that the victims of this passion is more likely to be impulsive people, poorly controlling your desires is a hallmark of alcoholics and real drug addicts not able to get rid of the addiction.

Hyun Suk SEO and his colleagues were interested in knowing whether changes in brain function in people suffering from the «digital» forms of dependence like, if these changes to what is happening with the nervous system of the victims of drugs and alcohol.

To answer this question experts have collected two groups of volunteers from two dozen teenagers and young adults, half of whom suffered from this addiction, and began to observe the work of their nervous system using a special magnetic resonance imaging, capable of revealing the chemical composition of different parts of the brain.

As a result the Korean biologists have found that the development of telephone or Internet»addiction» really changes the brain on a chemical level. The most serious failures were observed in that part of the cortex that is responsible for impulsive behavior and anxiety that sheds light on the appearance of the most dependencies.

Interestingly, these violations have disappeared or decreased markedly once young people have passed a rehabilitation course in one of the narcological centers of Seoul. This suggests that obsessive habits can be eliminated without serious consequences for the psyche and the human body, the scientists conclude.
