The UK government has submitted to Parliament a draft law guaranteeing respect for the rights of animals after the country’s withdrawal from the EU.

«The government should treat the welfare of animals as sentient beings, accordingly formulating and implementarea measures aimed at ensuring the well-being», — stated in the text of the bill.

«Animals are sentient beings who feel pain and suffering, and we make this principle the basis of our bill, which aims to ensure the welfare of animals. We also plan to increase the maximum prison sentence for those who commit the most heinous crimes against animals, up to five years. We are a nation that loves animals, and we will achieve that Brexit will benefit not only the citizens of our country, but also the animals, whom we love and care for them» — said, presenting the bill, Minister of environment and agriculture Michael Gove.

The urgency of introduction of the bill arose after MPs decided not to include in the bill on withdrawal from the EU point of European legislation, which defines animals as sentient beings capable of suffering. This decision caused outrage from animal rights advocates.
