Russian neutrino water detector NEVOD «caught» a large group of muons born in the atmosphere by cosmic radiation. To do this, scientists have gone on cunning: they were waiting for a beam of particles flying almost horizontally.

«Primary particle entered the atmosphere about 80-100 km from Moscow. According to our estimates, the energy of the particles that triggered the event is 7×1018 eV, which corresponds to about 150 TeV in the centre-of-mass. In other words, this value is 10 times the maximum energy that can be obtained at the Large hadron Collider», — quotes the press service of NRNU MEPhI graduate student Catherine Yurin, who discovered the event.

«For the study of cosmic particles with such energies in Argentina built the installation area of 3000 square kilometers (Pierre Auger Observatory). Developed in MEPhI approach allows you to record particles of such high energy, changing only the angle,» commented chief researcher of SEC NEVOD, doctor of physical and mathematical Sciences Rostislav Kokoulin.

«Groups of muons on other units even did not come close to such energies. And we’re going to have particles coming not from above, but nearly horizontally. In this case, the main role is played not by the area of the installation, and the area of coverage «shower» of particles that reaches tens of square meters. And where would the thunderstorm passed, we will still get,» explains RIA Novosti Professor Anatoly Petrukhin, head of the SEC NEVOD.

Every second in the upper atmosphere of the Earth formed muons — charged particles, resulting from collisions of cosmic rays with nuclei of air. These processes accelerate the muons to near-light velocities, so that they penetrate through kilometers of water and even rock.

Scientists observe these particles using radiation, opened in 1934 Pavel Cherenkov. It occurs when the speed of the charged particle exceeds the speed of light in water. This effect allows scientists to investigate cosmic rays and to catch neutrinos of ultrahigh energies.

High-energy beam of muons large multiplicity (124 muon) was born in the atmosphere of the night of October 11, 2017, fixed coordinate-tracking detector DECOR and Cherenkov water calorimeter NEVOD under a Zenith angle of 75 degrees (counted from vertical). Registering a Net group of muons with different Zenith angle, scientists are exploring primary particles of different energies, born in deep space.
