The leaders of the countries — members of EU at the meeting on Thursday took the political decision to extend the economic sanctions against Russia, which expires at the end of January 2018, said the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

«The EU unanimously in favour of the extension of economic sanctions against Russia,» Tusk wrote on Twitter.

Now the required technical procedure for the approval of sanctions by the EU Council. As previously reported RIA Novosti a source close to the leadership of the EU, this decision is expected next week. Sanctions, according to representatives of the EU, will be extended for six months without change.

The EU imposed restrictive economic measures against Russia in the summer of 2014 on the background of the conflict in Ukraine and later expanded them.
